Ask Peter

The wins that do exist are concentrated in a very specific window. All three have come over longer distances, between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — that is a lot of ground, and Ask Peter has won 3 of 13 races (23%) at those trips. Over shorter distances, the record is notably thinner, which tells you that this is a horse that wants time and space to get into a rhythm. Stretch the race out, and you have a different animal.

There is also a genuine course record worth noting. At Hamilton Park in Scotland, Ask Peter has won twice from just three visits — the first of those coming in August 2023. That is a remarkable ratio. Most horses win at a fraction of the tracks they visit, and most never dominate any single course at all. Two wins from three races at the same venue is the sort of record that makes a trainer keep putting the entry form in.

Jockey Archie Young has been the regular partner, and together they have clicked: 3 wins from 11 races is a 27% win rate, roughly better than 1 in 4, which is a strong number at this level. Honeyball's yard has been in excellent form this season — 51 winners is a serious tally — so Ask Peter is part of a stable operating with confidence.

The shadow over all of this is that the last win came at Catterick Bridge in October 2023, nearly three years ago now. The recent form — a mix of fourths, a couple of placed efforts, and one poor run — suggests a horse that is still trying without quite finding the moment. Ask Peter raced just yesterday, so it is very much in the mix. Whether another win is coming is the question. History says it is possible. Recent form says it will take patience.
