Anniversary

The numbers are honest rather than flattering. One win from 11 races works out to roughly 1 in every 11, and the recent run of form — fifth, seventh, second, fifth, fifth — suggests a horse that is knocking on the door without breaking through. That second place is encouraging evidence that the ability is still there, but converting near-misses into wins has proved elusive. The last six races have all come up empty, which at four years old is the kind of sequence that makes you wonder whether that Newmarket day caught Anniversary on a career peak.

The step up to Class 2 — some of the better races in Britain — has been a particular sticking point. Four attempts at that level have produced zero wins, a record that suggests Anniversary is perhaps finding life a touch too competitive at the top end. Finishing positions matter less here than the simple fact that none of those four runs ended in victory, which tells you this is a horse that performs solidly without dominating.

What is genuinely interesting is the yard behind it. Ralph Beckett, training out of Kimpton in Hampshire, has sent out 107 winners this season alone — that is a serious operation, and horses in his care tend to be placed thoughtfully. The fact that Anniversary is still running, still in training, and raced as recently as yesterday suggests the team believe there is more to come. Whether that belief is well-founded depends on whether a horse that has not won in nearly two years can rediscover the form it showed on that August afternoon at Newmarket. Racing is full of horses waiting for their moment to come back around. Anniversary is one of them.
