The recent form tells a story of inconsistency. The most recent run, just a day ago, saw American Gulf finish ninth, which follows a second-place finish and another second the race before that. There was a 13th-place effort in there too, suggesting the horse can struggle badly on certain days. What stands out is that flash of promise: three placings across the six-race record show American Gulf has the ability to run competitively, just not yet with the consistency needed to win regularly. Trainer Oliver Cole, based at Whatcombe in Oxfordshire, has the horse in a yard that has sent out eight winners already this season, so there is clearly racing talent at the stable. Whether American Gulf can rediscover the form that brought that Windsor victory and build on it remains the key question. For now, the horse is still racing and still hunting for that elusive second win.
