That kind of debut can mean different things. Sometimes a horse wins a weak first race and is never quite as good again. But a clean sheet is still a clean sheet, and what makes this worth watching is who is behind the horse. Amazonica is trained by Owen Burrows, based out of Lambourn in Berkshire, one of the traditional heartlands of British racing. Burrows has sent out 32 winners already this season — that is a yard in serious form, and horses trained by people in form tend to keep winning. When a trainer is operating at that level, a promising debut is rarely an accident.

With just one race to go on, there is only so much you can read into the form, and it would be wrong to overstate it. But a horse that wins on its first-ever outing, trained by a yard firing on all cylinders, raced just one day ago — that is a horse people will be keeping a close eye on next time out.
