The highlight of its career came at York in October 2022, when Alpha Capture won a Class 1 race — one of the most prestigious races you can win in Britain. That result announced it as a horse capable of competing at the very top level, and it remains the kind of achievement most horses never come close to. It had broken its duck just six weeks earlier at Carlisle, so the jump from first career win to a Class 1 prize in under two months was genuinely startling.

The curious footnote to all of that, though, is what has happened at Class 2 level since: 0 wins from 6 attempts. These are still elite races, one step below the very top, and the record suggests Alpha Capture has found them a tough nut to crack, perhaps being saved for either the biggest occasions or softer assignments. It is one of those statistical quirks that makes the horse harder to read than its overall record suggests.

Roger Fell's yard in Nawton, North Yorkshire, has had a productive season with 25 winners sent out, and Alpha Capture has played its part. Jockey Tom Marquand has partnered the horse nine times and won twice together — a win rate of 22%, or roughly 1 in every 4 rides — which is meaningfully better than the horse's overall average and suggests the partnership works. When Marquand is booked, it tends to go a little better.

Most encouragingly, Alpha Capture looks to be in the form of its life right now. Its last six results read 3rd, 3rd, 6th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd — with that sole blip sandwiched between a run of consistent placed efforts. It won at Doncaster just four weeks ago and raced again only yesterday. This is a horse that is busy, healthy, and competing well. Whatever comes next, Alpha Capture arrives at it in genuinely good shape.
