Alpha Capture

The highlight of its career came on 8 October 2022 at York, when Alpha Capture won a Class 1 race — one of the top races in Britain. York is one of the most prestigious venues in the country, and landing a top-level prize there is the kind of result that defines a career. It came just six weeks after a first career win at Carlisle in August of that year, making the autumn of 2022 the purple patch Alpha Capture's record is built around.

Since then, the wins have dried up. The last came at Killarney in July 2024, now nearly two years ago, and the most recent six races have produced finishes of 5th, 4th, 3rd, 3rd, 6th, and 2nd — consistently in the mix, but not quite finding the front. That pattern is worth noting: 13 places from 26 races tells you this horse rarely runs a stinker, but converting those near-misses has become the challenge.

The distances where Alpha Capture is most dangerous are the shorter ones — five to six-and-a-half furlongs, what you might call a sprint. It has won 2 of its 10 races at those trips, a rate of 1 in 5, which stands out clearly against its overall record. Stepping up in class to the second tier of British racing has so far produced nothing from six attempts, which suggests the yard may find more success keeping it at a slightly lower level where those sprint conditions can be exploited.

Tom Marquand, one of the better jockeys in the country, has partnered Alpha Capture nine times and won twice — roughly 1 in every 4 rides together, well above the horse's overall average. Fell's yard has been in decent nick this season with 23 winners, so the infrastructure is there. Alpha Capture raced just yesterday and remains very much an active competitor. Whether another win is coming is the open question, but this is a horse with a Class 1 win on its CV and a habit of finishing close.
