What gives the picture an optimistic tint is the yard behind it. Richard Hughes operates out of Upper Lambourn in Berkshire and has sent out 60 winners already this season — that's a stable in serious form, the kind of operation where horses tend to be placed in races they can win rather than simply making up the numbers. Having a trainer firing on all cylinders matters more than it might sound: horses from busy, confident yards tend to turn up fit, ready, and in the right races. Agamemnon raced just yesterday, so it is very much a horse in active campaign, with its the yard clearly keen to keep it busy while it is still learning its trade.

At two, everything is still very much in front of this horse. Most juveniles are figuring out what racing is even about at this stage, and a win from four races is genuinely encouraging. The name to watch for now is Wolverhampton — that's where Agamemnon broke its duck, and returning to a familiar track can sometimes unlock a horse that has since gone quiet.
