Mitchell has been riding since 2021, which means he has spent four years learning the craft — the rhythm of a race, how to read a field, when to ask a horse to go and when to hold your nerve. That education doesn't always show up in the win column, and with just a handful of races to his name in the past year, the sample is too small to judge him fairly either way. What it does suggest is that he is riding as an amateur or part-time jockey, fitting races around the rest of life rather than chasing a full professional career.

For casual observers, it is worth knowing that most people who sit on a racehorse competitively never ride a winner at all. The fact that Mitchell is still taking rides four years in says something about persistence, if nothing else. The wins may yet come.
