Zucayan

The overall numbers are lean: three wins from 32 races across a five-year career means Zucayan wins roughly one in every eleven races. Most tellingly, the horse has not won since May 2025—15 months ago—which was its last success at Ludlow. Recent form shows a run of places and unplaced finishes: a second, two more seconds, a tenth, and a ninth from the last six outings. That is the pattern of a horse that still has a bit of racing left in it but is not winning.

Zucayan performs best at distances between one mile six furlongs and two miles, winning three of 14 races at that range (21%), and clearly prefers normal ground conditions, where it has won three from 18 races (17%). Trainer Fergal O'Brien's Withington yard has been prolific this season with 90 winners, so the horse is in a productive stable. Nick Slatter, its most frequent jockey, has ridden it to three wins from 24 races together (12%), a marginally better win rate than the horse manages overall. At its current level—mostly Class 5 races, where it has won just once from 16—Zucayan appears to have found its permanent home. It remains active and races regularly, but the winning days seem to have passed.
