The recent form does little to encourage optimism. Over the last six races, the best it has managed is a third-place finish, bookended by a string of sixth, seventh, and ninth-place efforts. That is not the form of a horse building towards something — it looks more like a horse that is finding its level, and that level appears to be "nearly, but not quite." Having raced just one day ago, it is clearly a busy, active horse, which at least shows the team are keeping faith.
Simon Whitaker trains from Scarcroft in West Yorkshire, and his yard has sent out four winners this season. That is a modest but real total, which means winners are happening — just not for this particular horse. At some point, the yard have to weigh up whether more racing will change the story, or whether 23 races without a win is already telling them everything they need to know.
