Zero Tolerance

The recent form tells the story in numbers: second, third, third, third, fourth, second, reading back from the most recent run. That is a horse that genuinely competes. It is not trailing in at the back of the field — it is finishing close to the winners, race after race, without quite being able to get past them. At Class 4 level, which is the middle tier of British racing, it has run ten times and the result has been the same every time: a place, but no win.

Jockey Adam Wedge has been in the saddle for ten of those sixteen races and knows this horse better than almost anyone. Together they have finished in the places, built a partnership, and still not managed to find a way to the winner's enclosure. That is ten attempts without a victory — a frustrating statistic for rider and yard alike, though it clearly has not put either of them off.

Trainer Mrs C Williams runs a small yard in Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan, and three winners this season shows the team can get horses over the line when the right opportunity comes along. Zero Tolerance, though, has not been one of them — not yet. The horse raced just one day ago, which means it is very much in the middle of its campaign, and the team clearly believes there is still a performance worth waiting for.

Whether that win ever comes is the question. Zero Tolerance is nine years old, which is no longer young for a racehorse, and the clock is ticking. But horses that place as reliably as this one does are clearly fit, competitive, and willing. The talent to finish second is not so different from the talent to finish first — sometimes it just takes the right race, the right day, the right field. The team is still looking for that day. Zero Tolerance, to its credit, keeps turning up to help them search for it.
