What makes a debut win worth paying attention to is simply this: most horses don't manage it. Getting a horse fit, travelled, and composed enough to win first time out takes genuine preparation, and Zambezi Moon delivered on all of it. The trainer, David Richard Barry, will take quiet satisfaction from that — his yard has sent out three winners already this season, and this is the freshest of them.
Cork is the venue, and the question now is whether Zambezi Moon can build on it. One race is the thinnest of evidence, but there is nothing here to suggest anything other than a horse that handled its first test well and came out on top. Everything else is still to be written.
