Yosemite Gold

The numbers are honest rather than flattering. One win from 17 races is a 6% win rate — roughly one win for every 17 attempts — and the recent form makes for uncomfortable reading: two finishes outside the top ten in the last two completed races, with a couple of non-completions in between. Yosemite Gold has not won in the last six races, and that Roscommon victory is now ten months in the rear-view mirror. Four places in total shows the horse has been close enough to be competitive on occasion, but close doesn't pay the bills.

There is, however, a genuine clue buried in the numbers. Over longer trips — between a mile and six furlongs and two miles — Yosemite Gold wins 1 from 6 races, which works out at 17%, or roughly one in every six. That's a meaningfully better record than the overall career figures suggest, and it points to a horse that needs time and distance to find its rhythm. At the shorter end of what it's asked to do, it simply hasn't found the same level. Trainer Eoin Doyle, based at Mooncoin in County Kilkenny, will be well aware of that. His yard has sent out two winners this season, so this is a small, focused operation rather than a production line — every runner matters.

Raced just yesterday, Yosemite Gold is clearly being kept busy. The hope for anyone following this horse will be that the yard find another race at the right distance, on a fair day, at a track that suits — and that August 2025 turns out to be the start of something rather than a standalone moment.
