What makes the picture more interesting is that Yellowstone Lake clearly has a distance that suits it. At trips between seven furlongs and a mile, the horse has won one from three races, a 33 per cent win rate that stands out sharply against the overall record. This suggests the problem is not ability but rather finding the right race and conditions. Trained by P Twomey at Cashel in County Tipperary, where the yard has already sent out 35 winners this season, the horse has access to experienced hands. Yet something has gone wrong since that September win ten months ago. Whether that is down to rising in class, bad luck in running, or simply losing form is unclear from the record alone. At this stage, Yellowstone Lake needs a return to winning ways and quickly, or it risks becoming just another capable horse that never quite fulfils its promise.
