Yapper Hill

The recent form makes for sobering reading: in the last six races, the best result was a third place, with a seventh and a ninth also in there. The dashes in that sequence indicate missed runs, suggesting the horse has had its share of time off the track too. Jonathon Bewley has been in the saddle for seven of those eight outings and is still waiting for a winner — zero from seven together, which is a long stint of near-misses for any jockey-horse partnership. At some point, a yard starts to ask whether the combination is working or whether a fresh pair of hands might spark something different.

The trainer is George Bewley, based in Colby, Cumbria, and the yard has sent out six winners this season — so they clearly know how to get a horse in front. Yapper Hill just has not been one of them. It typically runs in Class 4 races, which sit roughly in the middle of the racing ladder — not the very cheapest level, but far from the big occasions either. Zero wins from three starts at that level suggests it may even be entered slightly above where it is most competitive. Raced just one day ago and still active, Yapper Hill is clearly fit and kept in work, and George Bewley has not given up on it. Sometimes that persistence is rewarded — but for now, this is a horse still looking for its moment.
