What makes that debut victory more interesting is who is behind it. Witches Familiar is trained by W P Mullins, one of the most powerful stables in Irish racing, based at Muine Bheag in County Carlow. The yard has sent out 220 winners already this season alone — that is not a typo. To put it in perspective, most trainers would be delighted with 20 or 30 winners in a full year. When a horse comes out of that operation and wins first time out, it tends to mean the team already knew it was ready. Horses do not leave that yard unprepared.
At four years old, Witches Familiar has plenty of time ahead of it. The big question now is where it goes next — whether the team tests it at a higher level or lets it build confidence with another run at a similar track first. Either way, a horse that wins on debut from one of the most prolific yards in the sport is absolutely worth keeping an eye on.
