Finishing ninth in a debut race is not unusual for a young horse still learning the job. First-time runners often take time to understand what is being asked of them, and a single result tells you very little about what a horse might become. The interesting part of Wintour's story at this early stage is who is doing the teaching. Clive Cox, based in Lambourn in Berkshire — one of the most famous racing villages in Britain — has sent out 48 winners already this season, which is a serious tally that marks him out as one of the more productive trainers in the country right now. A yard firing at that rate clearly knows how to get horses ready to perform, and that bodes well for what comes next.
There is nothing to draw conclusions from yet. One race, one ninth-place finish, and a first day back. Wintour is a blank page, and the only fair thing to say is that this story is just beginning.
