Winning Smut

Both of those wins came this year, the first at Ballinrobe in late May and the second at Galway in August, and both arrived on normal ground — a surface on which Winning Smut has now won 2 of 9 races, a 22% win rate that is comfortably better than double the overall average for horses at this level. That preference is worth noting. Get the conditions right, and this horse is a different proposition.

The Galway win was the one that caught the eye. Assistant trainer Lisa O'Neill described it vividly afterwards: jockey Jack had threaded through up the inside, got to the front a little sooner than ideal, and then the horse simply dug in and held on. O'Neill was candid that they hadn't been entirely sure what they had coming into that race, but Winning Smut had sneaked in at the bottom of the weights carrying a very light load — and in a competitive field, that kind of advantage can be the difference. It was opportunistic, yes, but it was also tough.

Gordon Elliott, one of the most formidable yards in Ireland with 210 winners already this season, has clearly identified that there is more to come. After a muted run at Cheltenham in a qualifier recently — where Winning Smut simply never got into it — Elliott was straightforward about it: the horse is better than that showing, and the plan is to find another opportunity in a similar qualifier down the line. The Cheltenham reference matters here. These qualifier races are stepping stones toward the Festival itself, and the fact that Elliott is pointing a twice-winning seven-year-old toward them tells you the yard believes there is a big day in this horse somewhere.

Racing just yesterday, Winning Smut is very much an active project. Recent form shows a horse that goes quiet and then fires — the wins sandwiched either side of some ordinary efforts. Whether there is a Cheltenham Festival run waiting at the end of this season is the question worth watching.
