The first win arrived at Ballinrobe in May 2025, which opened the account after a long wait. The second came at Galway in August, a track that tends to sort horses out fairly quickly. Galway is a sharp, right-handed circuit where horses either handle the tight bends or they don't — Winning Smut clearly does. Ground conditions matter here. On normal ground, Winning Smut has won 2 of 7 races — that's just under 1 in 3, a genuinely strong return. Shift the conditions away from that and the results thin out. It is the kind of detail that a trainer watches closely, and Winning Smut's trainer is someone who watches very closely indeed. Gordon Elliott, based at Longwood in County Meath, has sent out 209 winners already this season — a number that puts his yard among the most powerful operations in Irish racing. Having a horse like Winning Smut in a yard of that size means it will be placed carefully, on the right ground, at the right track, when the moment looks right.

With a run just yesterday and that recent purple patch still fresh, Winning Smut heads into whatever comes next in the kind of form that makes a horse worth following. It has taken a while to warm up, but at seven years old and with the wind behind it, the timing might just be perfect.
