Leopardstown on St. Stephen's Day is one of Irish racing's great occasions, a proper raceday, and winning there means something. But since then, the form has gone flat. The last six races read 8-3-8-7-6-2, which is the picture of a horse trying without quite getting there — a placed run here and there, but mostly finishing mid-pack or worse. The yard has had 8 winners this season under trainer Padraig Roche, based in Co Kildare, so the operation is in form. Win Some Lose Some just hasn't been able to tap into it.

That is the kind of number that makes a knowledgeable observer sit up. Most horses show only marginal preferences; a horse that wins three out of five when the ground suits is telling you something clear about when it can be at its best.

That is a genuinely strong combination, and when Walsh is booked, it has historically meant results. The horse has had a short break of 56 days since its last run, which is just long enough to suggest a deliberate freshening-up rather than an injury concern. If Roche can find the right conditions — a soft or wet surface, Walsh in the saddle — Win Some Lose Some could make all that recent running around in mid-pack look like a temporary interruption.
