Whimsy

The most striking pattern is Whimsy's love affair with Salisbury. From just three races at the track, it has won twice, a success rate of nearly two in three — that kind of record at a particular course is not luck, it is form. Even more recent, Whimsy won at The Curragh just last week, on 4 October, which shows the horse is still competitive and actively racing. In the last six outings, there has been a placing in four of them, including that recent win and a trio of placings, which suggests Whimsy remains a genuine threat in the races it enters.

Whimsy also performs noticeably better when the ground is wet or muddy — it has won 2 of its 9 races on such going, a rate of roughly one win in every four or five races, well above its overall average. Trainer A. McCann, based at Castleblaney in Co. Monaghan, has had the horse for its entire career and continues to place it in Class 5 races, where it has won 2 of 8 attempts. The one oddity is the partnership with regular jockey James O'Sullivan, who has ridden Whimsy seven times without a winner, yet the trainer clearly sees enough in the horse to keep running it. For a mid-level yard, Whimsy represents exactly what those operations rely on: a horse that is not going to win a big race but will collect cheques and pay its way through honest, repetitive effort.
