Wellwillya

Those two wins tell a neat story. The first came at Exeter in October 2024, and the second arrived at Fontwell Park in February 2025 — meaning Wellwillya went from a career-opening winner to a follow-up in the space of four months. Both came at Class 5 level, which is where this horse has done most of its racing. At that grade, Wellwillya has won 2 from 12 races — about 1 in every 6 — which is actually a respectable record. It's not a horse built for the big occasions, but at its right level, on its day, it knows how to get the job done.

The recent form is worth a look. Reading from most recent back: a non-finish, then fourth, then second, then another non-finish, then second, then that last win at Fontwell. There's inconsistency there — the blank runs are a concern — but the two placed efforts sandwiched around that win show a horse that can still compete. It raced just one day ago, so it is very much in active service.

One curious detail: Paul O'Brien has been the regular partner, riding Wellwillya nine times without finding the winner's enclosure together. That's not necessarily O'Brien's fault — the horse's overall record is modest — but it's the kind of stat that makes you wonder whether a change of jockey might spark something. The two wins have both come without him in the saddle, which is at least food for thought for the yard going forward.

Wellwillya won't be troubling the top races in Britain any time soon, but that's not really the point. This is a horse doing its job at its own level, picking up the odd win and place when conditions fall right. For a general punter, the appeal is simple: it's competitive, it's consistent enough to be interesting, and it clearly hasn't read the script that says its best days are behind it.
