The recent form makes for difficult reading too. In the last six races, Watty Show has finished seventh twice, fourteenth once, and pulled up or was otherwise noted as not completing on two occasions. There is no upward curve here, no sign of a horse closing in on a breakthrough. The fourteenth-place finish in particular suggests at least one run where things went badly wrong from early on.

What keeps the story interesting is who is doing the training. Henry De Bromhead, based at Knockeen in County Waterford, is one of the most respected names in racing on either side of the Irish Sea. His yard has sent out 115 winners already this season — a remarkable volume that speaks to an operation firing on all cylinders. The fact that a horse can sit in that environment and still be waiting for win number one tells you something about how hard racing actually is. Even the best yards have horses who simply haven't found their moment yet. Watty Show, who raced just one day ago and remains active, is clearly still being given the chance to find it.

Whether that moment comes is the open question. At six, time is not unlimited, but horses have won their first races later than this. For now, Watty Show is a horse that a powerful yard believes is worth persisting with — and in racing, that quiet vote of confidence from a trainer of De Bromhead's calibre is not nothing.
