At that track alone, the horse has won three of nine races—a rate of one win every three attempts, which is significantly better than its overall record suggests. That last victory came on 22 December, at the tail end of last year, which means there is a seven-month gap since the horse last crossed a line first. Whether that reflects a dip in form or simply the nature of racing schedules is hard to say from the numbers alone.

Trained by Chelsea Banham at Cowlinge in Suffolk, Watermelon Sugar typically races in Class 5 company, where it has won three of fifteen outings. The horse is usually partnered by Joey Haynes, though their record together tells a cautionary tale: three wins from thirty-three races together, a win rate of 9 percent. Given that the horse itself wins at nearly double that rate, there may be a mismatch there—or the rider simply hasn't found the horse's best form. For now, Watermelon Sugar is still active and racing, but it will need to rediscover the kind of form that made Lingfield such a happy hunting ground if it is to add to that tally of seven wins.
