The first win came at Doncaster back in July 2022, which feels like a long time ago now. The second, and most recent, arrived at Ballinrobe in May 2024 — over two years ago at the time of writing. Since then, Wandering Rocks has gone six races without troubling the scoreboard at the top, the most recent of those coming just yesterday. The last six runs read as a largely fruitless sequence, with a third place in there offering the only real glimpse of a horse still capable of running into the money.

At distances of a mile and three furlongs to a mile and four, Wandering Rocks finds its best ground — winning 1 of 7 races at those trips, a 14% win rate, which is comfortably the strongest part of its profile. That kind of stamina trip suits a horse that grinds rather than sparkles. When the team have pitched it against the better quality horses — Class 2 races, among the sharper company in Britain — it has drawn a blank in all three attempts, which suggests the ceiling is real and the horse is probably more comfortable one level down.

Oakley Brown is the regular partner, the pair having worked together six times with that one win between them — about 1 in every 6 rides together ending in victory, which is not bad considering the horse's overall record. William Durkan's yard has been in decent form this season, sending out 13 winners, so the operation is clearly functioning. Whether Wandering Rocks can add to that tally is the question. It is a horse that has spent a long time being almost good enough, and at seven years old, the window for a change of fortune is not getting any wider.
