Both of those wins have come in 2025, which tells you something about a horse hitting his stride. The first came at Windsor in early June, and then trainer Eve Johnson Houghton backed him up quickly to capitalise on the form. He ran at Kempton shortly after — on the all-weather surface — and it didn't quite work, finishing out of the places. Johnson Houghton was candid about why: she felt she had to run him quickly because the handicapper had raised his rating by 9lb after Windsor, meaning he'd carry extra weight as a penalty if he ran again soon. The logic made sense, but Kempton confirmed what she already suspected: he simply isn't as good when the ground isn't turf. The yard, based in Blewbury, Oxfordshire, has sent out 42 winners this season, so they clearly know a thing or two about placing horses right.

The plan now is to give him a proper break and find a suitable race on turf — possibly back at Windsor, where he won so convincingly. That's a sensible call. Jockey Charles Bishop has ridden him six times and won twice, a win rate of 33%, or roughly 1 in every 3 rides together — a partnership that clearly works when conditions are right. His recent form reads 11-10-3-6-1-5 going back six races, which looks mixed at first glance, but once you account for unsuitable surfaces and ground conditions, the picture is far more encouraging than those numbers suggest. When the sun is out and the ground is dry, Walson's Law is a horse worth keeping a very close eye on.
