What is worth noting is the company this horse keeps. Marco Botti's yard in Newmarket is one of the busier operations in British racing this season, having sent out 45 winners already — that is a serious training operation, and horses in that stable tend to get every opportunity to find their feet and improve. A seventh-place finish on debut for a two-year-old from a yard like that is far from a death sentence. Young horses are often rough around the edges first time out, and plenty of useful horses have looked ordinary before clicking into gear on a second or third run.
For now, Wadima is very much a horse to watch rather than a horse to write home about. One race tells you very little, and with an active campaign apparently under way — having raced as recently as yesterday — there should be more chances to form a proper picture soon.
