That level is firmly at the lower end of the racing ladder. Class 6 is the entry-level tier of British flat racing, and Voodoo Ray has spent the vast majority of its career there — 34 of its 37 races, picking up all 5 wins in that company. There's no shame in it; every race needs a field, and horses like this are the workhorses of the sport. What's more telling is the ground conditions. On normal going, Voodoo Ray has been extraordinary — winning 4 of just 7 races, a 57% win rate. That's not a coincidence, that's a preference, and when the ground comes up right, this horse is a different animal.

The partnership with jockey Tom Queally is one of the more interesting threads in its career. Queally has ridden Voodoo Ray in 21 of its 37 races — more than half its career — and together they've won 4 of them, a win rate of 19%, or roughly 1 in every 5 rides. That's meaningfully better than Voodoo Ray's overall average, which suggests the combination works and that Queally has learned how to get the best from this horse. It's the kind of long-running partnership that's rarer than it used to be in modern racing.

The yard behind it — Gary and Josh Moore, operating out of Lower Beeding in West Sussex — is having a productive season by any measure, sending out 99 winners so far. That's a busy, successful training operation, and Voodoo Ray is just one piece of a much larger puzzle.

The trickier question is form. The last win came at Bath in May 2024 — 25 months ago now — and the most recent six runs read 9-5-4-9-7-11, which is a sequence heading in the wrong direction. Voodoo Ray raced just yesterday, so the team is clearly keeping this horse active and looking for the right opportunity. Whether that opportunity arrives may depend on one thing above all else: getting the normal ground it clearly loves.
