Voodoo Angel

The recent form tells a mixed story. Looking at the last six races, Voodoo Angel has posted a pair of third-place finishes and a second, which shows the ability is still there. But the gaps in the sequence — two blank runs where it didn't place at all — suggest inconsistency is the real enemy here. A horse that finishes second one week and then disappears out of the picture the next is a frustrating watch, and anyone following Voodoo Angel will know that feeling well.

Jockey Theo Gillard has been the regular partner, riding in six of those races together without a win to show for it. That said, the placed finishes suggest the combination isn't without merit — they just haven't found the right moment yet. The yard behind the horse belongs to Donald McCain, one of the more recognisable names in northern racing, based at Cholmondeley in Cheshire. With 51 winners already sent out this season, McCain's operation is clearly in good form — which makes Voodoo Angel something of an outlier in an otherwise productive string.

The horse typically runs at Class 5, which represents the lower end of the racing ladder — these are races designed to give horses a realistic opportunity to win. Going 0 from 5 at that level is the most telling number in the file. This isn't a horse being asked to punch above its weight against better rivals; it is competing at exactly the level where it should, in theory, be most likely to succeed. That it hasn't yet broken through makes every race feel like unfinished business. Voodoo Angel raced just yesterday, so the next opportunity may not be far away — and after 13 attempts, a first win would be quite a moment.
