The recent form tells an interesting story though. Strip out a poor run where it finished eighth and before that a blank, and you find a horse that has gone 2-2-3-4 in its last four completed efforts — beaten, yes, but not embarrassed. Finishing second twice in a row is the kind of form that keeps a yard interested and keeps punters frustrated in equal measure. The horse clearly knows how to race; it just has not yet found a way to be first past the post.
Visual Impact competes at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the racing pyramid — not the glamour of the top races, but competitive enough that winning requires something a little special on the day. Going 0 from 10 at that level is a tough record to defend, and at seven years old the window for turning that around is not unlimited. Horses do not get younger, and patience has its limits.
The team behind the horse is genuinely strong. Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore operate out of Milnathort in Perth and Kinross, and with 47 winners on the board this season they are a yard in form — the sort of operation that knows when a horse is worth persevering with and when to move on. The fact that Visual Impact is still in training says something about what they see in it behind the scenes. A 34-day break since its last run suggests the team has given it a little time to freshen up before asking the question again.
Whether the answer changes next time out remains to be seen. Visual Impact is a horse that has shown enough to remain interesting without yet showing the one thing that truly matters.
