A single sixth-place finish tells you almost nothing about a horse's potential, and that is especially true of a two-year-old. At this stage of their career, young horses are still learning the basics: how to load into the stalls, how to travel in a pack, how to respond when asked to quicken. The first run is often more about education than expectation. Plenty of very good horses looked ordinary first time out.
What is more encouraging is the company Vinery keeps. Trainer David Evans, based at Pandy in Monmouthshire, has sent out 37 winners already this season — a serious tally that marks his yard out as one that knows how to get horses to perform. When a trainer is operating at that kind of volume, the horses around them tend to benefit from a well-drilled, confident operation. Vinery is in good hands as it learns the ropes.
