The recent form makes for familiar reading. Of the last six completed runs, the best result was a second-place finish — which is genuinely close — but that's bookended by finishes of 14th, 10th, and 9th, suggesting inconsistency is as much a part of Verified's character as anything else. The horse raced just one day ago, so the yard are clearly committed to keeping it busy and searching for that elusive breakthrough.
The partnership with jockey N G McCullagh hasn't cracked the code either. Ten races together and still no win — though in fairness, that's a reflection of the horse's overall record rather than anything specific to the pairing. When you haven't won at all, it's hard to blame the rider. The yard itself, trained by Gerard Keane out of Trim in County Meath, has been productive this season with 10 winners sent out — which actually makes Verified stand out a little, and not in the way you'd hope. When the stable is clearly capable of winning races, a horse that can't manage one from 24 attempts starts to look like an outlier.
None of this means Verified is without merit. Seven places from 24 races shows a horse that tries, and second place is a genuine result. But at five years old, with no win on the board and recent form that's been patchy at best, the clock is ticking. The next race will be attempt number 25. At some point, a breakthrough would stop being a surprise and start feeling overdue.
