Upton Fern is a five-year-old still searching for a breakthrough. The horse has competed twice without a win or a place finish, most recently running eleventh just a day ago. Before that came a fifth-place finish, so there is at least some sign of improvement in the last pair of attempts.
Debra Hamer, who trains at Nantycaws in Carmarthenshire, has sent out three winners this season from her yard, so there is experience on hand. Whether Upton Fern will be the next to cross the line in front remains to be seen, but the horse is still in active competition and has not been shelved just yet.
