There are a few things worth keeping in mind, though. Unique Procedure raced just one day ago, so it is very much an active, developing horse rather than a forgotten one. Three-year-olds are often still maturing physically and mentally, and it is not unusual for horses of this age to take several races before things begin to click. The improvement from seventh to sixth to fifth across the earlier runs hints — just hints — at a horse that may be learning, even if the most recent ninth place is a step back.
The trainer, Julia & Shelley Birkett, operate out of Newmarket, which is arguably the heartland of British flat racing. The yard has sent out 15 winners this season, which shows it is a functioning, competitive operation capable of getting horses into the winner's enclosure. Unique Procedure has not been one of those winners yet, but it is not being trained in obscurity — Newmarket is a serious base with serious competition, and surviving four races there without placing is no disgrace if the horse is still developing. The question now is whether the yard can find the right opportunity to get the best out of it.
