Union Station

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In its last six races, Union Station has posted finishes of second, second, fourth, and fourth, with two runs in between that did not result in a placing. That pattern — regularly threading into the money, rarely threatening to take it — has become something of a signature. It raced just 19 days ago, so this is an active horse still being aimed at opportunities, not one quietly being wound down.

Keith Donoghue has been the jockey on board for 12 of those 15 races, making him effectively the horse's regular partner at this point. Between them, they have yet to win a race together — 0 from 12 — which is either a fascinating loyalty or a stubborn refusal to try something different, depending on your point of view. To be fair to both of them, the placing record suggests the partnership is competitive; they just cannot quite get over the line.

The trainer is Gavin Cromwell, operating out of Navan in County Meath, and his yard has been in sharp form this season — 94 winners is a serious number, the kind that puts you among the busiest and most successful operations in Irish racing. That context matters. Union Station is not being trained by someone who does not know how to get a horse to win. The fact that Cromwell keeps running this horse suggests he believes the right opportunity is still out there. Whether Union Station finally grabs it remains to be seen, but at seven years old, with a season still in progress, time has not quite run out yet.
