Under The Radar

The trouble deepens when you look at recent form. Under The Radar has not found the winner's circle in its last six races, returning 12-2-6-5-3-3 most recently. That second-place finish shows it can still be competitive on its day, but the 12 suggests it has been well beaten at least once lately. When stepped up to Class 2 level—one of the top races in Britain—the horse has managed nothing from three attempts, which hints that it may simply not be sharp enough for that grade. It performs better against lesser opposition, which is not unusual for a horse with this record, but it does limit where it can win.

With jockey David Allan in the saddle, Under The Radar has fared slightly better, winning 1 of 6 races together, a rate of roughly 1 in 6—noticeably better than its overall record. That partnership might be worth watching if Allan gets the mount again. Easterby's Great Habton yard has been prolific this season, sending out 128 winners, so the trainer clearly knows how to get horses over the line elsewhere. The fact that Under The Radar remains in work after 17 races and is actively racing—it ran just yesterday—suggests Easterby believes the horse has more to offer. Whether it can find another win remains to be seen, but it is at least still in the game.
