It arrived at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the British racing ladder — not the glamour end, but not the bottom rung either. Intriguingly, Uhtred Ragnarson has never won at that class despite racing there five times, which means the Warwick victory came at a different level. That is a detail worth noting: this horse has found its one moment of glory outside its most familiar surroundings.

The partnership with jockey Philip Armson is the elephant in the room. They have ridden together eight times and have yet to win — 0 from 8 is a long run without a breakthrough. That is not necessarily a damning verdict on either horse or rider, but it does suggest the combination has not quite clicked yet. Recent form gives a little cause for optimism: two third-place finishes either side of a missed run, and that win sandwiched in between, suggests the horse is at least in reasonable shape heading into whatever comes next.

Trainer Alan King, based at Wroughton in Wiltshire, is no small operation. His yard has sent out 57 winners already this season, which puts him firmly among the more productive stables in British racing. That is a serious training record, and it means Uhtred Ragnarson is in good hands even if the results have been modest. With the horse having raced just one day ago and still active, there is clearly more story still to come — though whether that story involves a second win, or more near misses, remains entirely open.
