Three months on, that victory still stands as the defining moment of his time in training, and it is worth savouring: a horse who had been knocking on the door for years finally getting the reward his consistency deserved.

What makes his recent form genuinely eye-catching is the sequence he has put together since that win. His last six races read 4-2-3-1-2-2 — with the most recent first — which means four finishes inside the top three from his last five runs. For a horse who spent most of his career agonisingly close without quite getting there, that kind of sustained form at the age of eight suggests he has found a real rhythm.

He has spent most of his career running in Class 4 races — the bread-and-butter level of the sport, a step or two below the big occasions — and has yet to win at that level from 12 attempts. The irony is that his sole win may have come at a slightly different level or in different circumstances, but it proves that when everything clicks, he can get the job done.
