Twilight Calls

The most telling detail is what happened just this week: a victory at Goodwood on 28 July. That came after a sixth-place finish and then an eighth, so the horse bounced back convincingly. This kind of resilience matters. Twilight Calls races almost exclusively at Class 1 level — the top tier in Britain — but has never won at that grade, going 0 from 16 attempts. That's the real ceiling here. The horse does better when dropped slightly in class or on tracks where it feels at home. Richard Spencer's Newmarket yard has it running with purpose right now, and the horse clearly prefers normal ground conditions, where it has won 3 of 13 races (a 23% win rate). At Newmarket itself, Twilight Calls has won twice from seven races, making it a bit of a specialist there.

One curiosity: Ryan Moore, one of Britain's finest jockeys, has ridden Twilight Calls six times without a win. Chemistry between horse and rider matters enormously in racing, and these things don't always click. But with three wins in six races overall recently, and Spencer's yard firing on all cylinders this season with 30 winners already, Twilight Calls is a horse doing its job — not at the very top table, but consistently and reliably, which is exactly what keeps racehorses racing into their later years.
