What makes Twilight Calls a fascinating case study rather than just a hard-luck story is where it has been competing. Sixteen of its 26 races have come at Class 1 level — the very top tier of British racing, the kind of races that attract the best horses in the country. It has won none of them. Zero from sixteen. That is not a record of failure so much as a record of ambition; this is a horse that has been asked the hardest questions in the sport, week after week, and kept showing up. Most horses at this level who struggle that consistently get quietly dropped into easier company. Twilight Calls hasn't been.

The partnership with Ryan Moore is worth noting, mostly because Moore is one of the finest jockeys in the world, and even he hasn't been able to unlock a win here — 0 from 6 together. When a rider of that calibre can't find a way through, it tells you the issue isn't tactical. The recent form figures of 6-8-5-6-12-14 show a horse that has been finishing mid-pack at best over its last six races, with no obvious signs of a comeback brewing.

Richard Spencer's yard has been in decent shape this season, sending out 27 winners, so it isn't as though the operation is struggling for form around Twilight Calls. This horse is simply an 8-year-old veteran who found its moment in the spotlight once, at Newmarket in the spring of 2022, and has been chasing that feeling ever since. It raced just two days ago and remains active, which at least suggests the team still believes there's something left to find. Whether there is remains the question.
