Tranquil Sea

What makes Tranquil Sea particularly interesting is how strongly his numbers point to one thing: he loves normal ground. In the eight races he has run on standard conditions, he has won three of them — that is a win rate of 38%, or nearly two in every five. Compared to his overall rate of 15% across all ground, the contrast is stark. Get him on ground that suits and he becomes a very different proposition.

He is trained by Dan Skelton, who operates one of the most prolific yards in Britain right now — 194 winners in the current season alone. That kind of output means horses get placed in the right races at the right time, and Skelton's own comments suggest he has thought carefully about Tranquil Sea's trajectory. After a slightly sticky run at Newbury over a long trip, Skelton felt the horse could be better than he showed that day and spoke about finding more races to win with him. That is the language of a trainer who sees untapped potential rather than a horse at his ceiling.

The comments from the track back that up. After Tranquil Sea's first career win at Cork in March 2024, the assistant trainer noted that he had loads of energy left approaching the line — a promising sign in a young horse. And after a win at Plumpton, jockey Harry Skelton was candid: the track was not ideal, Tranquil Sea prefers somewhere longer where he can get into a rhythm, but they came for the prize-money and they got it. There is something appealing about a horse and team who know exactly what they are doing and why.

Where he has not yet delivered is at the top level. In four attempts at Class 2 — some of the best races in Britain — he has not won. But given his current form and a trainer in full flow, it would be premature to assume that stays the case for long.
