The recent form figures make for uncomfortable reading: 9-4-14-10-12-2. Reading from right to left, as form students do, you can see a horse that ran a promising second before losing its way entirely — finishing 12th, then 10th, then 14th. The fourth place three runs ago offered a brief flicker, but ninth last time out suggests the horse is struggling to find any consistency at all. It raced just yesterday, so the yard — sorry, the team — clearly have faith it can run, but the pattern is not an encouraging one.
Tracker Issue is trained by Adam Nicol, based up at Seahouses on the Northumberland coast, about as far north as British racing gets. Nicol's yard has sent out 26 winners this season, which tells you the operation knows how to get a horse to win. The puzzle is why this particular horse has not been able to join that tally. Some horses take time to mature, others need very specific conditions to show their best, and a few simply find ways to finish second or third without ever putting it all together on the day. At 15 races into its career, Tracker Issue is running out of the benefit of the doubt — but with an active trainer and a race just yesterday, it is clearly not a horse that has been given up on.
