That kind of busy schedule suits horses who are in form and confident, and the recent results — first, fourth, sixth, first, second, eighth, reading back from the most recent — show a horse that has its good days and its off days, but is clearly capable of winning at this level.

Where Tokyo Joe looks most dangerous is over the shorter distances. In races between five and six and a half furlongs, the record is one win from three races, or winning one in three — noticeably better than the overall career average. At that clip, you are talking about a horse that genuinely fires over a sharp, quick trip. Most of its racing has come at Class 5, which sits in the middle of the racing ladder, and it has won one in five at that level — respectable without being spectacular, but consistent enough to make it a horse worth watching when the conditions suit.

Tokyo Joe is trained by Ed Walker, whose yard at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire has been in serious form this season — 76 winners and counting, which is the kind of output that puts a stable firmly among the busier and more successful operations around. When a yard is producing winners at that rate, the horses in good form tend to keep running, and Tokyo Joe appears to be one Walker is happy to keep active while things are going well. A horse mid-campaign, trained by a yard firing on all cylinders, and coming off a win just days ago — that is a combination that tends to make people pay attention.
