What makes that slightly puzzling is the level at which this is happening. Class 5 is the entry level of British racing — these are not the deepest fields or the most talented horses — and yet across six races at that level, the win column remains empty. In that context, seven places from 15 races overall (roughly 1 in every 2 races producing a place finish) reads less like a horse on the verge of a breakthrough and more like a very reliable second act.

Jockey Aiden Brookes has been the regular partner, riding in six of those races together without a win. That is not necessarily a damning statistic — the pair clearly know each other well, and the placed form suggests the partnership is working in some sense — but it is a combination still searching for its first victory together. Trainer Micky Hammond, based at Middleham in North Yorkshire, has had 25 winners this season from his yard, so there is no shortage of form coming out of the stable. The question is simply whether Toby Two Scoops can translate that into a win of his own.

After a break of 31 days, the yard — the trainer and team — will be hoping the freshen-up has made the difference. Horses sometimes come back from a short rest sharper than they left, and the placed form is recent enough to suggest there is no serious issue at play. A second place in the last six runs is the closest this horse has come, and with a handful of thirds banked alongside it, the pieces are not far from falling into place. Whether they actually do is, of course, the part nobody can guarantee — and the part that keeps people watching.
