Tis But A Scratch

The partnership with jockey Tabitha Worsley has been long and consistent — 23 races together without a win between them. That kind of sustained effort without breakthrough success speaks to both commitment and realistic assessment: neither horse nor rider appears to have been sent elsewhere chasing a fresh chance. Trainer Georgie Howell, based at Tenbury Wells in Worcestershire, has put Tis But A Scratch into Class 5 races almost exclusively, and across 19 of those lower-level races, the horse has drawn a complete blank. At this level of competition, a horse that cannot find the winner's enclosure is usually at the end of its useful racing life, kept in work more from loyalty or hope than any genuine expectation of return.

What's perhaps most telling is that Tis But A Scratch is still active — it raced just yesterday. At ten years old, with nothing in the bank, most horses would have been retired to quieter lives. Instead, the horse continues to turn up, to try, and to fall short. There is something almost stubborn about that persistence, though whether it reflects the wishes of the trainer, the owner, or something else entirely, only the yard at Tenbury Wells could say.
