Time Was

The recent form offers a sliver of hope without demanding too much optimism. In the last six completed races, Time Was has finished second once and third once, which at least confirms the horse is still trying. But the pattern holds — present, placing occasionally, never winning. Jockey Joe Williamson knows this horse better than almost anyone, having partnered it 15 times without a winner between them. That is a long working relationship built entirely on near-misses and what-ifs.

Class 5 is where Time Was spends most of its time, which in practical terms means these are the most accessible, least competitive races on the calendar — the entry level of the sport. Sixteen races at that level, zero wins. That is not bad luck; that is a horse that consistently finds at least one rival it cannot pass when it counts. Philip Kirby's yard at East Appleton in North Yorkshire is clearly capable — 36 winners this season is a healthy return, so this is not a struggling operation. Time Was simply appears to be the one that keeps the yard honest about the fact that racing does not always reward effort with results.

The name, at this point, feels almost poetic. Whatever time was going to come for this horse, it has not arrived yet across 19 races and counting. Raced just one day ago and still active, there is at least the suggestion that the team believes there is still a race to be won somewhere. Whether that faith is eventually rewarded is the question that has now followed Time Was for an entire career.
