Time Was

The recent form makes for interesting reading. In its last six races, Time Was has recorded finishes of 4th, 3rd, 4th, a pulled-up or unseated run in the middle, then 8th and 5th — and that was only yesterday, so this is a horse that is still actively racing right now. The placing form suggests it finds the frame occasionally, but converting that into a win has proved elusive across the entirety of its career.

Jockey Joe Williamson has been the regular partner, riding Time Was in 15 of its 21 races together without finding the winner's enclosure. That is a long and fruitless partnership by any measure, though it speaks to a loyalty between horse and rider that clearly hasn't been broken by results. Philip Kirby, who trains the horse at his yard in East Appleton, North Yorkshire, is no stranger to winners — his team has sent out 36 this season alone, so this is clearly a capable operation. Time Was simply hasn't been able to add to that tally. The horse competes almost exclusively at Class 5, the entry level of British racing, and has run 16 times at that level without winning. At that tier, a win should theoretically be within reach — which is perhaps what keeps everyone coming back.

At nine, Time Was is not a young horse, and career profiles like this one — plenty of racing, plenty of near-misses, no wins — are more common than people might think at the lower end of the sport. Some horses are just honest, reliable participants who give their best without ever quite producing the moment that makes it all click. Whether that first win ever arrives is the open question, but yesterday's run suggests the answer hasn't been given up on just yet.
