Trained by William Knight out of Newmarket in Suffolk, Tilted Kilt is part of a yard that has been in decent form — 28 winners already this season is a healthy total and suggests the operation knows how to get its horses ready to run. Cieren Fallon has been the regular partner, riding in 6 of its races together and winning once, a win rate of around 1 in 6 between them.

The distance that suits it best is the 7 furlongs to 1 mile range — essentially the middle ground between a sprint and a proper test of stamina — and the numbers back that up sharply. One win from three races at those trips works out to winning 1 in every 3 attempts, which is a completely different animal from its overall record and tells you the team has a clear target to aim at. It raises the question of whether the horse is being asked to compete slightly above its comfort zone at that grade, and whether finding the right conditions at the right trip might unlock a different result. It raced just one day ago, so it is bang in the middle of its season right now, and with Southwell behind it and a yard in form, there is every reason to keep it on your radar.
