His love of Ayr is the other thread running through his career. He won there on his first visit back in July 2023 and returned to land a top-level Class 2 race there on 20 September 2025 — one of the better races in Britain. In 3 visits to Ayr in total, he has won twice. Joint-trainer Kaine Wood was candid about why: the soft ground suited him, he had won there before, and the key was riding him with real confidence. There were already bigger targets being discussed afterwards, with York and Ascot mentioned as possible next steps. For a horse that has spent most of his career competing at Class 2 level — winning just 1 of 10 races there — that September win showed he is capable of rising to the occasion when conditions fall his way.

Regular rider Tom Eaves has been in the saddle for 15 of his races together, picking up 2 wins from that partnership, or 1 in every 7 or 8 rides. Thunder Roar raced just yesterday, keeping him firmly in the mix this season, though he has not won in his last 6 outings and his recent form figures — finishing as low as 16th — suggest he is waiting for the right conditions rather than hitting his peak every time out. The yard, which has sent out 12 winners already this season, clearly knows what brings the best out of him. When the rain comes and the ground gets soft, and the track is Ayr, Thunder Roar is worth a second look.
