He travels with genuine strength when things go his way, and when he gets his own way at the front of the race, he looks genuinely impressive. The catch, as it always is in racing, is that when a horse wins, the handicapper takes notice. Thornaby Pearl then finds himself with heavier weights and tougher fields, which he struggles to handle. He does not thrive in the rough-and-tumble of a scrappy middle-of-the-field battle; he needs a clear run and space to breathe.
