To be fair to the horse, finishing in the teens in a competitive field still means crossing the line, and McKiernan's yard has shown it can find the winner's enclosure — four winners already on the board this season suggests the operation knows what it's doing. But Thirsty Work hasn't been able to contribute to that tally, and the trend of its recent finishes is heading in the wrong direction. Going from 10th to 11th to 13th to 15th across four consecutive races isn't a blip — it's a pattern, and it's the kind of pattern that raises real questions about whether the horse is improving, staying the same, or struggling to find its best.
The one thing worth noting is that Thirsty Work raced just yesterday, so whatever this horse is, it is very much still active and still being given chances. That in itself tells you something — McKiernan clearly believes there's something to work with. Whether that faith is rewarded any time soon is another question entirely, but for now, Thirsty Work remains a horse in search of its first moment.
