The Monkey King is a two-year-old with exactly one race under its belt, run just yesterday. It finished sixth on that debut, which tells us very little beyond the fact that it has started learning what racing is all about. Most young horses are works in progress at this stage, and a single sixth-place finish is barely a data point — it is simply the beginning of a story.
What is more encouraging is who has the horse in their care. Ralph Beckett's yard at Kimpton in Hampshire has sent out 107 winners already this season, which is the kind of output that marks out a genuinely high-performing operation. Horses trained there tend to be well-prepared, and Beckett has a strong record of developing young horses steadily over time. For a two-year-old in that environment, one unplaced run really is just the opening chapter.
